De Luna Fest Donating Half Its Profits To Ecological Causes July 26, 2010

The organizers of the inaugural De Luna Fest in Pensacola Beach, Fla., aren’t going to let the Gulf of Mexico oil spill halt their plans to host the two-day music event in October.
Despite a drop in summer tourism in Pensacola Beach as a result of the oil disaster, ticket sales for the festival are “extremely strong,” says Nick Bodkins, a partner of event producer Five Flags Tourism Group. He’s hoping the Oct. 15-16 festival, scheduled to feature such acts as Stone Temple Pilots, Bush, Daughtry and Dierks Bentley on three stages directly on Pensacola Beach, will attract up to 25,000 people per day.
And higher ticket sales means more money for charity: 50% of the De Luna Fest’s net profits will go to various ecological endeavors including the Emerald Coast Keeper, according to Bodkins. He’s also expecting traffic from the event to give a much-needed boost to the local economy, which has suffered since the oil spill in April.
“We wanted this to inject new capital into the community and we’re seeing that,” Bodkins says. “We’ve seen ticket sales in 33 states already . . . so people are seeing what we’re doing and are getting onboard.”
Tickets are available through the event’s website. A limited number of early-bird weekend passes ($60) were still available at press time.
The festival will also feature performances by 311, 30 Seconds to Mars, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, the Bravery, Rebelution and Better than Ezra, among others.
AEG Live’s Scott Gartner, who’s based in the company’s regional office in West Palm Beach, served as the talent buyer for De Luna Fest.
